It is our policy to be fair and impartial in all our relations with staff, performers, customers and suppliers without regard to race, religion, age, sex, family status, sexual orientation or social status. This policy applies to recruitment, selection, training and promotion. It also applies to our programme and hire policies. We respect the right of all people who visit, perform at or trade with the Space to be treated with courtesy and consideration.

Youth Activities

Space Cadets Space Cadets is the name of our youth drama group for 7-11 year olds. This is a great opportunity for children from the Isle of Dogs to get involved and put their talent on display. The time is spent playing theatre games and working towards a final production in which all the children will participate at the end of term. Our autumn drama program included children from many different schools on the Isle of Dogs and our Christmas production, Bob Bobbobbin, was hugely successful.

Sarah Mooney has been our tutor since January 2005. . This is a free opportunity for any child between the ages of 7 and 11 years.

Space Cadets is currently on a break, and we hope to resume a new term in the near future.

Monday Night Drama is a group open to local young people between the ages of 13-17 years old. The group focuses on drama games, improvisation and script work. It allows anyone who is interested in any part of theatre (writing, directing, set design, lighting, etc) and performing to collaborate in a creative environment. At the end of each term a showcase of play will be performed to members of the public. This term we have been working with George Green School on a production of 'Burying Your Brother in the Pavement' written by Jack Thorne ('Shameless', 'Skins'). The play will be performed at The Space and the Arcola Theatre as part of a competition to be premiered at the National Theatre.

Adult Activites

The Reminiscence Project is well under way in preparation for performances on 8-10 April. The Reminiscence Project, funded by the City Bridge Trust, has been constructed in several different phases. The first phase involved a series of workshops with elderly residents of the Isle of Dogs. The focus of these workshops was storytelling based on experiences, memories, and local history. The next stage is currently under way and consists of using the results of these workshops to create a script. The final phase will be the performance of a piece of community theatre at The Space. Elderly residents are involved in every stage of the production process, from research and script development, to costumes, set design, props, performing, marketing and promotion. This project aims to enable people of all ages and backgrounds to experience the arts through participation.

An event in correlation with the Reminiscence Project is the upcoming Sing Along, a 'Cockney Ding Dong'. The event is being held on Saturday 22 March from 2-4 pm. Everyone is welcome to come enjoy an afternoon of socializing and singing along to favorite old time tunes and music hall classics, including: 'I've Got a lovely Bunch of Coconuts', ' When You're Smiling', and 'I Belong to Glasgow'.
